What is Energy Psychology?

Energy Psychology (EP) is a family of evidence supported modalities that balance, restore and improve human functioning by combining physical interventions (using the acupuncture system, the chakras and other ancient systems of healing) with modern cognitive interventions such as imagery-based exposure therapy. These methods are being used around the world by thousands of mental health and allied health professionals as well as lay people to achieve rapid, dramatic and lasting therapeutic shifts in feelings, thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors.

Positive clinical and experimental outcomes have shown EP methods to help alleviate multitude of issues including trauma and PTSD, anxiety and phobias, depression, addictions, weight management, pain. They have also been found to support improvement in school, sports and work performance.

Some of the more common forms of Energy Psychology Include: Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), Thought Field Therapy (TFT), Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT), EDXTM, Comprehensive Energy Psychology (CEP) and Matrix Energetics.

How Does EP Work?

Mind-body approaches to healing recognize a multi-layered interconnection between the different systems of body, the brain and the mind. These connections are supported through numerous scientific disciplines including: psychoneuroimmunology, epi-genetics, interpersonal neurobiology, and neuroplasticity. The effectiveness of energy psychology approaches appears to derive from a synergistic effect of focusing attention on specific memories and other cognitive-affective experiences while teaching clients skills to activate the energy systems of the body to normalize functioning, including disruptions in the brain and brain stem. The results typically transcend the normal ability to change experience through conscious effort. Instead, subjects repeatedly report spontaneous resolution of negative thoughts, feelings and memories.

In his 2010 "Rapid Treatment of PTSD" article in Psychotherapy: Theory, Research, Practice, Training, psychologist David Feinstein speculates that adding acupressure point stimulation to psychological exposure is unusually effective in its speed and power because signals are sent directly to the emotional core of the brain known as the amygdala, responsible for the processing and memory of emotional reactions, resulting in rapid reduction of maladaptive fear. The more we learn about brain function, electromagnetic energies, and neurochemistry, the more evidence there is to support this explanation.

How Can EP Benefit My Practice?

Energy Psychology includes a variety of techniques that have proven to be effective with a broad range of issues and can be easily incorporated into a mental health practice. They can help increase the effectiveness of the methods you already use, giving your clients more relief and progress than they would experience using any one method alone.

Learning how to use mind-body techniques in traditionally body-centered therapies gives practitioners an expanded view of the possibilities for healing and offers greater options and levels for intervention. In addition, you can help empower your clients in their own self-care by teaching them techniques they can use themselves in between their appointments with you. To hear from others who have integrated EP into their practice, we encourage you to watch the Eric Robins, MD Youtube introduction to TAT (see left) and to read the EP article by Hyla Cass, MD on The Huffington Post.

In any healing enterprise it’s important to stay current with leading edge practices and the field of Energy Psychology is the new frontier in theory and clinical application.

How Do I Introduce Energy Psychology Techniques to My Clients?

We encourage a spirit of curiosity and exploration. As you explore with your clients the power of the mind-body connection, the therapeutic relationship deepens, the options you offer become more comprehensive, and the techniques you already use have the potential to become more powerful and effective. A great resource to help your clients understand more about energy psychology is our Clients and Consumers Page.

How Do I Decide What to Learn?

There are many possibilities for learning different kinds of Energy Psychology methods. One way to get an idea of what you might want to pursue is to attend one of the comprehensive conferences: the 15th Annual International EP Conference taking place May 30-June 3, 2013 in Reston, VA  for an overview and to sample different EP methods.

Another approach is to attend ACEP's Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) Professional Skills 1 Workshop or Essentials in Comprehensive Energy Psychology, Level 1 Workshop (CLICK HERE FOR A CALENDAR OF UPCOMING WORKSHOPS IN YOUR AREA). Or you can simply read newsletter articles and discussions on the web site to get you started. There are also a wide range of books now available about energy psychology written by our members CLICK HERE TO VISIT ACEP'S AMAZON BOOKSTORE. Finally, we have a list of practitioners who would be happy to talk to you about their areas of expertise and practice.

What the Experts Are Saying

"The techniques of Energy Psychology have provided me with invaluable tools for working with trauma. No therapist can afford to remain ignorant of this new and exciting field." -Nathaniel Branden, PhD, author of The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem"
"With increasing globalization there has been a growing curiosity in psychological practice about Non-western methods of dealing with disturbances within the human organism. Not based on Western rationalism, these methods do not rely on insight and understanding, but on shifting internal states of bodily experience. Energy Psychology techniques and procedures can bring about remarkably rapid changes in the way people feel and move through the world."    -Bessel A. Van Der Kolk, MD, Medical Director, The Trauma Center, Brookline, MA and Professor of Psychiatry, Boson University School of Medicine"
"Nature has fashioned a way to encode survival behaviors and we can use this knowledge to de-link the patterns that lead to fear response. I have found using EP methods with my patients that I'm able to de-link this response so that the person is no longer stuck in their past. We are in a very exciting time!"  -Ron Ruden, MD, author of The Craving Brain"
"EP laser-focuses the principles from energy healing into psychological issues. You change your energies and you change your neurochemistry. You change your neurochemistry and you change your mind, your mood and your behavior. It is deceptively simple and surprisingly effective." -Donna Eden, co-author of Energy Medicine"
"Energy Psychology involves super learning and may be the most effective therapy to reprogram dysfunctional unconscious beliefs that control life and biology." -Bruce Lipton, PhD, author of The Biology of Belief"

Is There Research That Supports EP?

There are currently over 50 Energy Psychology (EP) studies published, 95% of which show positive outcomes related to EP treatment. The most recent Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) (recently published in the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease) has shown Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT, an EP modality) to significantly lower cortisol-related stress levels and self-reported psychological symptoms after a single treatment session...To read more, click here

Can I Get Continuing Education Credits for Attending These Trainings?

Our Continuing Education committee works very hard to meet the requirements of a variety of professions to get approval for CE credits. ACEP-sponsored events usually offer CEs for social workers, counselors, nurses and marriage and family therapists.

Psychologists: As of November 11, 2012, ACEP is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. ACEP maintains responsibility for its programs and their content.

ACEP is approved to provide CE credit for: Psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses and more.   Click here for full details
