ACEP Board - Officers
Phil Mollon, PhD, DCEP - President

Phil Mollon qualified in clinical psychology at Leeds University in the UK in 1976. He subsequently trained in psychotherapy at the Tavistock Clinic, qualifying in 1985. Later, he trained as a psychoanalyst with the Institute of Psychoanalysis in London. He is the author of ten professional books, on a range of psychoanalytically oriented topics, including shame, trauma, dissociation, and self-psychology.

Over the last ten years he has been immersed in the study and development of energy psychology approaches. His most recent book is Psychoanalytic Energy Psychotherapy, exploring the interface between energy psychology and psychoanalytic perspectives. He is a Diplomate and Certification Consultant for ACEP. Through his background in clinical psychology and psychoanalysis, he has been able to introduce many of those in more traditional fields to the possibilities of energy psychology. He works in psychiatric settings within the British National Health Service, as well as privately.

Lynn Mary Karjala, PhD, DCEP- President Elect, Chair - CEP Certification


Lynn is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Roswell, Georgia. In addition to her general practice, she specializes in the treatment of severe trauma, including Dissociative Identity Disorder and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. She has extensive experience in the training of other clinicians in both conventional and alternative approaches to treatment and has given numerous presentations in the U.S., the U.K., and Canada. Her favorite topics include ways to combine energy psychology with the best of traditional therapy, especially in the treatment of trauma.

Lynn is well traveled in pursuit of her studies. She received her A.B. from Radcliffe College in Cambridge, MA, and her master’s from the University of Hawaii/Manoa. She completed her Ph.D. in developmental psychology at the University of Massachusetts/Amherst and later respecialized in clinical psychology at Georgia State University in Atlanta.

Lynn is an Approved Consultant for the ACEP Certification process and Chair of the Certification Committee. She is trained in AIT, EFT, TAT, BSFF, Allergy Antidotes, and clinical hypnosis. Before going into clinical practice, she was a tenured faculty member at Southeast Missouri State University, where she taught graduate and undergraduate courses on child, adolescent, and life-span development and the psychology of death and dying. She is the author of Understanding Trauma and Dissociation: A Guide for Therapists, Patients, and Loved Ones and co-author of Taming Trauma Beasties: Helping Children Confront Trauma and Heal.

Lori Chortkoff Hops, Ph.D. - Secretary

Lori Chortkoff Hops, Ph.D. is a Licensed Psychologist and Reiki Master with a private practice in Westlake Village, California. Dr. Hops serves on the ACEP Executive Board of Directors as Secretary (2016-2017). She has been an ACEP member since 2010, and is becoming certified in Comprehensive Energy Psychology.

Dr. Hops has been treating children, families and individuals for more than twenty years. She combines practices from western empirical science, wisdom traditions from around the world, and her personal heart based intuitive guidance when working with others. She also teaches workshops and seminars to professionals, graduate and undergraduate students, and the general public on topics such as energy practices, spirituality, coping with illness, self-care, laughter yoga, intuition, and movement arts.

She received her Masters and Doctorate degrees in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in child and family from the University of Houston, Texas (APA accredited). Her psychology internship was at Kaiser Permanente, Los Angeles Department of Psychiatry (APA accredited). She received a grant to conduct her dissertation research on the effects of behavior problems on children’s intervention in parents’ marital discord. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Experimental Psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Dr. Hops is a registrant with the National Register of Psychologists. She also serves on the Board of Directors for Gift of Life, Los Angeles, a nonprofit organization that funds heart surgeries and provides nutritional assistance for children in El Salvador.

Lori has been dancing since age three (modern, ballet, jazz, belly dance), including choreography and performance, practices yoga, and creates intuitive painting. (


Wade Cockburn, MA - Treasurer



Wade H. Cockburn, MA, ABD is a Relational Somatic Psychotherapist and a Qualified Mental Health Professional. He previously was the clinical supervisor and family, individual, and child therapist at an Oregon children’s day-treatment center. He and his wife have recently relocated to the Houston area where he is finishing his dissertation and preparing to defend this spring.

After 30+ years as a successful small business owner, Wade entered graduate school to continue his service career as a psychotherapist. He was introduced to energy psychology as a client in the early 90’s before being trained in 2006. He joined ACEP as a member in 2008. Wade conducts workshops and trainings in authentic communication, relationships, and parenting. Along with ACEP, he is a member of the APA and the US Association of Body Psychotherapist


Fred P. Gallo, PhD, DCEP - Immediate Past President


Fred Gallo, Ph.D., clinical psychologist, has published numerous journal articles, book chapters, and manuals. He has also authored and co-authored eight books, including Energy Psychology; Energy Diagnostic and Treatment Methods; Energy Tapping (with H. Vincenzi); and Energy Tapping for Trauma. He coined the term energy psychology and published the first professional book in the field. Since 1980, he has been training professionals in various therapeutic approaches. Since 1993, he has been offering training internationally in Advanced Energy Psychology: energy diagnostic and treatment methods (EDxTM™), energy consciousness therapy (ECT™), and the identity method (IM™). He has presented on Energy Psychology throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, in addition to parts of the Pacific Rim, China, and Africa.

Dr. Gallo studied with Dr. Roger J. Callahan, founder of thought field therapy (TFT), and Dr. John Diamond, founder of behavioral kinesiology (BK). He also studied and practiced cognitive behavioral therapy, Gestalt Therapy, neurolinguistic programming (NLP), and Ericksonian hypnotherapy.

He began his professional career as a teacher and counselor after undergraduate and graduate study in philosophy at Duquesne University. He later attended training in clinical psychology and child development, receiving an MA from the University of Dayton and a Ph.D from the University of Pittsburgh. He has been on the faculty of Penn State University and has also worked in the fields of corrections, mental retardation, child welfare, chemical dependency, and hospital psychology. In addition to private practice, he is associated with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), Meadville Medical Center, Mind-Body Wellness Center, North Star Behavioral Health, and Children’s Aid Society of Mercer County.

Robert Schwarz, PsyD, DCEP - Executive Director


Bob was appointed to the position of Executive Director in September of 2008. Prior to this he was on ACEP's Board of Directors for three years. During that time he served as the Conference Director, while also helping steward many of ACEP's key initiatives focused on improving operational and financial aspects of ACEP.

He is a licensed psychologist and coach in Ardmore, Pennsylvania and is author of Tools for Transforming Trauma (2002), Posttramatic Stress Disorder: A Clinicians Guide (1991), and We're No Fun Anymore: Helping Couples Cultivate Joyful Marriages Through The Power of Play (2011).


From 1989-1996 he was president of the Institute for Advanced Clinical Training, where he organized 11 conferences on trauma, Ericksonian Hypnosis and Brief Therapy, training over 10,000 therapists. He is a clinical member of AAMFT, an approved consultant for the ASCH and is diagnostically trained in TFT and is a diplomate in comprehensive energy psychology.


Bob has presented numerous workshops internationally on energy psychology, Ericksonian therapy and treating trauma. He has numerous videos including: The neuroscience of the effectiveness of EP.  and Energy Psychology as a brief approach for Treating Trauma.  He balances work with writing songs and playing guitar in a rock-and-roll band and he is 1/2 of the acoustic duo the Keynoters that have performed at the ACEP conferences in 2014 -2017 and the 2015 IONS conference.

Pamela Michel Altaffer, LCSW (Chair - Membership Committee)



Pam specializes in helping people have happy relationships. A challenging relationship is a source of pain for many of us whether it is with an intimate partner, our mother-in-law or a co-worker. Pam's passion is to guide people in having relationships of their heart's desire.

Beginning in 1996, Pam has used a number of energy psychology techniques (TFTdx, EFT, TAT, BSFF) to help her clients achieve fast, effective results. She, her husband Tom, and Sandi Radomski created a new EP technique called Ask and Receive. Pam teaches and trains people in A&R nationally and internationally.

Pam has been a licensed psychotherapist for over 30 years. Before learning EP, she started out as a Brief Systemic Family and Couple's practitioner and saw individuals using Neuro-linguistic Programing and Brief Strategic Therapy. For the last couple of years, Pam has morphed into a coach/mentor. She now loves seeing clients nationally and internationally via SKYPE.

For fun, she leads Women Evolving(WE) groups (positive, fun, blossoming groups for Goddesses), InterPlay groups, and loves to dance and bicycle. She lives with her husband and daughter in Tucson, AZ and in Linwood, NJ. She also has a grown son.

Suzanne Connolly, MSW

Suzanne lives in Sedona, Arizona where she has been in private practice for thirty-three years. She is licensed as a Clinical Social Worker, a Marriage and Family Therapist, and a Substance Abuse Counselor. Suzanne has taught as an adjunct professor at Arizona State University where she taught Holistic Social Work in the graduate program.

Suzanne recently joined the ACEP Research Committee and she has participated in three trauma relief deployments to New Orleans working with survivors of Katrina, and six trauma relief deployments to Rwanda working with survivors of the 1994 genocide. Suzanne has participated in three research studies in Rwanda, which have been published in peer reviewed journals. She also as the previous chair of the TFT Foundation Trauma-Relief Committee has helped coordinate trauma relief efforts in Haiti, Mexico, Rwanda and Uganda.

Suzanne has been training professionals and non-professionals in Thought Field Therapy (TFT) since 1996 and has trained over 2,000 people around the world to use TFT at the algorithm level. She is the author of Thought Field Therapy: Clinical Applications, is lead author on two random controlled studies and co-author of one outcome study, all published in peer-reviewed mainstream professional journals.

Julie George, LSW


Julie George is a licensed social worker working in the mental health field. Julie earned a Masters in Social Administration from Case Western Reserve University with a concentration in Adult Mental Health.

Currently, Julie is a self employed therapist at The Family Institute in Erie, Pa. facilitating therapy for individuals, couples and families.  She has over 25 years experience working in mental health/social services. Sixteen of those years have been as a licensed social worker/ therapist. In addition to therapy, she has worked in international adoption, substance abuse, family services, criminal justice, and therapy.   She has facilitated groups with the Psychology of Incarceration program, taught stress management workshops, and meditation classes and facilitated various other workshops and retreats. Additionally, she served as a clinical director at a public mental health outpatient clinic 6 years.

Julie has been a member of ACEP since 2005.  She has been a member of the Education Committee for 6 years and serves as the chairperson of the Quality Assurance subcommittee of the Education Committee. She is a member of National Guild of Hypnotists.   

Julie has been trained in various techniques in energy psychology and is currently pursuing the Energy Psychology certification through ACEP.  She is certified in TAT (Tapas Acupressure Technique), is a certified Heart Rhythm Meditation teacher from the Institute of Applied Meditation and a certified hypnotherapist through the National Guild of Hypnotists. She is also pursuing certification in Aromatherapy from Aromahead Institute. She takes a holistic approach in all her work and has been interested in complementary approaches to healing for most of her life.

Kristin Holthuis, MD, DCEP (Chair - International Committee)


Kristin Holthuis is a Dutch family physician who has lived and worked in Costa Rica for over 16 years. In her holistic private practice she combines Family Medicine with energy psychology and flower essences to enhance self-care, healing and spiritual development in her patients.

She is a certified EFT teacher (AAMET, AHEFT) and a board member of ACEP and the AHEFT (Associación Hispana de EFT). She is also a lead trainer for the ACEP certification program.

Her goal is to enhance access for Spanish speaking professionals to the ACEP certification program, which has been active since 2011 in Costa Rica.

Mark E. Lomax, MBA, MS

Mark has extensive experience and background in non-profit associations, having worked for and serving on numerous committees and boards, including holding positions of president, chairman, and executive director. He was the past Co-Chair on the Mental Health Task Force of the Pennsylvania Commission for Justice Initiatives.

In 2008, Mark retired as a Major with the Pennsylvania State Police with over 27 years of dedicated service. His last assignment was the Director for the Bureau of Training and Education, where he oversaw all training and education for the Department’s 6,300 personnel. For 19 years, Mark volunteered as a Peer Contact in the PA State Police Member Assistance Program, providing confidential assistance to enlisted, civilians and their families. Through his personal experiences and as a peer contact, Mark witnessed firsthand the psychological impact first responders may endure in the performance of their duties.

After the state police, Mark served as the interim Director of the MBA program at Eastern University. Mark also spent a year in Liberia, West Africa, as a program manager for the United Nations.

He has a BA degree in psychology from LaSalle University, a MBA degree from Eastern University, and a MS degree in Higher Education from Drexel University. 

Sherry O’Brian, LCSW, DCEP (Chair - Education Committee)

Psychotherapist, international author & speaker who has assisted thousands of individuals within her workshops, groups, and private practice to transform their pain into possibility. Sherry is the sole proprietor of Mind/Body/Spirit Inner-grations and specializes in personal growth and transformation, as well as working with those suffering from chronic illness, grief/loss, and other emotional disorders. She also facilitates support groups for cancer patients and their family members at The Cancer Support Community of Central Indiana, as well as develops seminars and workshops on mind/body/spirit healing as an independent contractor for several professional organizations.

As a motivational speaker her workshops and retreats focus on mind/body/spirit healing and personal growth. Sherry has presented several times at the Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology, The International Society for the Study of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine, and the National Association of Social Workers conferences, sharing innovative, often cutting-edge techniques, to inspire, motivate, and empower other professionals to better assist their clients.

Sherry has over eighteen years experience in the oncology field, as well as twenty plus years within the field of mental health. She is certified in Comprehensive Energy Psychology, Emotional Freedom Technique, Advanced Clinical Hypnotherapy, Psych-K™, Subtle Energy Therapy, Integrative Energy Therapy, Bereavement Counseling, & Guided Imagery. She is a Reiki Master and an ordained minister.

Paula Shaw, CADC, DCEP (Liaison to the Research Committee)


Paula Shaw, CADC, DCEP is a therapist, author and teacher. With a degree in Education and Communications, from Long Beach State University, she later attained her graduate counseling credentials at Loyola Marymount University, specializing in alcohol and drug abuse counseling as well as grief-recovery work. In 1999, Paula fell in love with the newly emerging field of Energy Psychology and is one of the founding members of ACEP.

She developed her system, Conscious Healing and Repatterning Therapy (CHART), in 2000 and introduced it at the first International Energy Psychology Conference.

Paula’s desire to learn even more compelled her to explore the world of the Chakras. Wanting to increase people’s awareness regarding this wonderful aspect of the human energy system, Paula completed the first edition of Chakras: The Magnificent Seven, in 2002. She just released a revised edition in 2013.

For 22 years, Paula has been helping clients create rapid change through her proprietary method, CHART. She is also a Reiki Master and is trained in all of the major Energy Psychology modalities including EFT, TAT, BSFF, Allergy Antidotes and Matrix Energetics. She has a private practice in Encinitas, CA. Where she serves as Energy Psychology Counseling Specialist with Dr. Andrea Cole at the Center for Age Management.

Sylvia Stengle, MPH



Sylvia Stengle first learned about energy healing modalities in 2011, from a Director of Counseling that had been recently hired in the Pennsylvania women’s medical clinic she founded in 1978, The Allentown Women’s Center. She then took ACEP seminars in energy psychology and emotional freedom technique, attended ACEP conferences, and did some reading, with the result that she came to have the enthusiasm of a convert about the efficacy of energy healing modalities.

Her career has been in women’s health services. Over the years, she has served as a trustee on several not-for-profit boards on the local, state and national level.  She has training and national experience in health education and media advocacy. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Wisconsin with a major in history. She has a Master of Public Health degree from the University of California-Berkeley.

Debby Vajda, LCSW - Consultant to the Board
Debby Vajda is a licensed clinical social worker in private practice in Corvallis, Oregon. She has been practicing energy psychology for twenty years and is trained in TFT, EFT, TAT, BSFF, Allergy Antidotes, and NeuroModulation Technique, among others.

She was a member of ACEP's Board of Directors for nine years, formed the Development and Board Advancement Committees, and served as president  during 2013-14.  She is also the developer and past-coordinator of the Energy Therapy Network of the Mid-Atlantic States.


Craig Weiner, DC


Craig Weiner, DC is a licensed doctor of chiropractic and has been in practice for nearly 30 years offering an integrated mind-body model that provides safety, nurturance and empowerment for patients and clients. He is a Certified Accredited Master Trainer for AAMET (Association for the Advancement of Meridian Energy Techniques), is a trainer of Evidence Based EFT for clinicians, is one of the four certified Matrix Reimprinting EFT trainers in North America. In addition he is also a certified META-Health Practitioner certified through the International META-Medicine Association, (IMMA). He is the co-developer and facilitator of the online Tapping out of Trauma training program. He trains professionals,lectures, mentors/supervises energy psychology students and practitioners internationally in clinical and business skills along with his wife and partner Alina Frank. He is passionate about the science of tapping and will be releasing the documentary film, the Science of Tapping in 2018.
