Violence Recovery

Mental Health Triage for Gun Violence and Other Mass Trauma

You Can Feel Peace and Calm Again

If you have been affected by the epidemic of violence, you may experience mental health issues. It may seem that you can never be happy again. That is completely normal.  But have you ever heard of
post-traumatic growth?

We want to assure you that healing from trauma and experiencing post-traumatic growth is possible and energy psychology tools can help.

In the aftermath of trauma...

People may experience issues like PTSD, depression, anxiety, and other concerns. You may have trouble sleeping or getting out of bed. You might find it difficult to concentrate. You may even feel that life has lost its meaning. It can seem that your life is forever changed because of your experience.

While life has changed, you do not have to suffer for the rest of your days.

Energy psychology can help you heal

Many people who have experienced tragedy have used the effective tools of energy psychology to heal their trauma. The tools provided on this page will help you get started on your journey to recovery and growth. We are here for you.

The information on this page is designed specifically for those who:

  • Have been an indirect victim via vicarious traumatization, either by knowing a direct victim or by witnessing violence
  • Treat victims of violence, working as medical or mental health providers
  • Are first responders to scenes of violence
  • Make policies about responses to gun violence

What you need to know

  1. Healing from post-traumatic stress is possible and far easier than many say.

  2. Energy psychology approaches can help restore people to their better selves after violence; people can experience post traumatic growth in ways that many cannot even imagine.

  3. After experiencing or witnessing violence, it is normal for the body to have reactions. These reactions are not “disorders”. Insomnia, hypervigilance, fatigue, increased blood pressure and heartrate, and various forms of pain are normal trauma responses. The effects of experiencing violence, witnessing violence, and responding to violence are stored in the body.

  4. Energy psychology approaches can release the stored energy and eliminate its effect. These approaches are evidence based and can be used either as self-help tools or as clinical tools when used by trained practitioners.

Move from coping to healing

Madelana is a survivor of the Borderline Bar & Grille massacre. In the aftermath of the tragedy, she sought help for her trauma symptoms. She went to regular therapy for two years. Sadly, that regular therapy left her just coping with the effects of trauma.

Then she found Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), an energy psychology method. In just two sessions, Madelena healed from the trauma. She now lives a happy, healthy life. With energy psychology, she got her life back.

Self-help techniques

If you are looking for self-help tools to cope with the aftermath of tragedy, ACEP offers
Resources for Resilience. The tools listed on this site are simple, body- and energy-based tools that will help you restore calm and balance, reduce anxiety and overwhelm, reduce fear, and even resolve troubling memories.

You will find links to videos as well as instructions in pdf form, available in English, Spanish, German, and Portuguese.

Practitioner database

If you are looking for a skilled practitioner to help you work through your issues, ACEP offers a
practitioner directory. You will find clinicians based on country and state (within the US), specializing in trauma or post-traumatic stress, and using a variety of techniques. The techniques with the greatest evidence base for treating trauma are Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), Thought Field Therapy (TFT), and EMDR; there is promising research in Advanced Integrative Therapies (AIT) and Heart Assisted Therapy (HAT).

Using energy psychology for disaster relief (for mental health/health professionals and community leaders)

Would you like to learn more about how energy psychology has been used to help people recover from natural and human-created catastrophes?

David Feinstein has written an excellent article you need to read,  published in Frontiers in Psychology. It has been translated into several languages. Here is a recap.

"Efficacy for energy psychology protocols has been established in more than 160 clinical trials, with meta-analyses showing strong effect sizes for PTSD, anxiety, and depression. The approach has been applied in the wake of natural and human-made disasters in more than 30 countries. Four tiers of energy psychology interventions following the establishment of safety, trust, and rapport are described, including (1) immediate relief/stabilization, (2) reducing limbic arousal to trauma-based triggers, (3) overcoming complex psychological difficulties, and (4) promoting optimal functioning...

After establishing a framework for introducing energy psychology in disaster relief efforts, reports from a sampling of settings are presented...These include accounts of relief work with survivors of mass shootings, genocide, ethnic warfare, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, wildfires, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hundreds of other reports from the field show a pattern of strong outcomes following the use of energy psychology in the days or weeks after a disaster and in the subsequent treatment of trauma-based psychological problems. Many of these accounts corroborate one another in terms of rapid relief and long-term benefits. Finally, examples of more efficient delivery methods utilizing large groups, lay counselors, digital technology, and cultivating community resilience are presented."
